Writing

At the Federation of Grove House and Kings Park Infant Schools, our intent for writing is to develop confident and enthusiastic writers and story tellers who can express their ideas creatively and clearly. Through the Talk for Writing approach, we aim to provide children with the skills necessary to become fluent, independent and effective writers.

The Talk for Writing approach supports children through imitation, innovation and independent application. Our classrooms are literacy rich environments which foster a love for books, storytelling and purposeful writing opportunities. Daily Read Write Inc phonics lessons support transcription skills and continuous use of EBI’s and verbal feedback inform planning and individual next steps for pupils.

The impact of our writing curriculum is shown in the progress and enthusiasm of our pupils. We assess the impact through book looks, pupil voice and by using cold and hot tasks during talk for writing units. We can see the progress made across all year groups, such as stamina and language features used. Children can internalise and retell a model text during the imitation phase, allowing them to use key language features in their own writing.
