White Rose Maths at The Federation of Grove House and King’s Park Infant School
Our Maths Subject Leader is: Mr Wiseman

The White Rose Maths scheme has been implemented across Early Years and KS1 since September 2021 to ensure sufficient curriculum coverage. The 3 aims of the maths national curriculum are introduced in Reception and embedded at key stage 1. The Yearly overviews for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 can be seen below. Children show mastery of concepts by explaining their reasoning.  Children of all abilities are given regular opportunities for problem solving activities.

In Reception, children use a combination of White Rose Maths and the NCETM’s Mastering Number Programme (see below). Mastering Number Programme is used in Reception to teach Number and Numerical Patterns. White Rose Maths is used to teach Shape, Space, Measure and Pattern.

The CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach is used throughout the school for children of all abilities. Working walls show modelled examples of how children can approach tasks using the CPA approach.  Children refer to the working walls to enable them to be independent in their learning and next steps.

Pupil voice questionnaires show that children enjoy maths. All children asked said that they feel `happy’ and `good’ about maths and that `it is fun’. They talk about how their teachers help them, what they are trying to get better at, and how they know if they have been successful.

Mastering Number Programme

New for September 2024, The Federation of Grove House and King’s Park Infant Schools have enrolled on the NCETM’s Mastering Number Programme.  This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

Children take part in daily sessions which last around 10-15 minutes with the aim of developing good number sense.  Please see the overviews for this programme below:
